Well, on the first day of 2014, I finished my New Years Eve Socks and in the process of making them I think I’ve determined my go-to vanilla sock pattern. They fit well, they’re fun and mindless to make and work with all kinds of yarn. So, taking a cue from Susan B. Anderson’s How I Make My Socks post, here’s my favorite vanilla sock pattern.
Meredith’s Vanilla Socks
Cast on 68 stitches (or 64 for heavier fingering like Socks that Rock)
Join in the round (I use 2 circular needles but magic loop or dpn’s work, too) and work K3P1 ribbing for 7 inches (I like a long leg.)
Follow instructions for the Fish Lips Kiss Heel (linked on Ravelry.)
Rejoin to work in the round, knitting the sole stitches and continuing with K3P1 on the top of the foot until you reach the base of your pinky toe or 2 1/2 inches less than desired foot length.
Decrease for toe as follows. Instructions begin at beginning of sole stitches.
Sole stitches: K1, SSK, knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K
Top of Foot: K1, SSK, knit to last 3 stitches, K2tog, K
Knit all stitches
Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until 24 stitches remain. Kitchener toe stitches.
